Malaysia Home to Medtech Hub in Southeast Asia
Malaysia was recognised as Southeast Asia’s top medtech hub at the Malaysia Medtech Industry Summit 2024 in Penang. The Medical Device Industry Status and Outlook 2024/2025 report highlighted this achievement. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries (AMMI) jointly unveiled the study. It noted Malaysia’s high concentration of multinational medtech companies.
Malaysia’s medtech industry has grown significantly in recent days. A welcoming environment and strong talent development have boosted its progress. Furthermore, the government has prioritised the medical device sector in the Twelfth Malaysia Plan and the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. Experts say this commitment fuels innovation. MIDA drives further growth through strategic collaborations and proactive efforts.
Leading in the Medical Device Market
Malaysia also leads Southeast Asia in the medical device market. In 2023, the country’s medical device market was worth RM10.6 billion. This also makes Malaysa among Asia’s top ten markets in medical tools. Investors are drawn to Malaysia’s vibrant ecosystem, which includes sterilisation, biocompatibility testing, and packaging. The country offers the widest range of sterilisation methods, including EtO, Gamma, and E-beam. Malaysia is also the first in Southeast Asia to develop an X-ray sterilisation facility. Its advanced infrastructure and adherence to international standards ensure global competitiveness.
The report highlighted the industry’s local economic impact. RM6.7 billion in raw materials and services came from local suppliers and SMEs. Domestic vendors secured contracts worth RM4.1 billion, with 95% focused on finished products.
MIDA will continue to collaborate with associations like AMMI to attract high-quality investments. These efforts will create jobs, increase export value, and strengthen Malaysia’s supply chain ecosystem.
