Understanding Annual Report (AR)

Annual Report (AR)An Annual Report (AR) is an official document that Malaysian companies must prepare every year to report on their financial and operational performance. Companies must submit their AR to the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), typically within 30 days of their Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The preparation and submission of the AR are the responsibility of the company secretary and accountants. The AR includes key elements such as audited financial statements, updates on the company’s activities, details of directors and shareholders, and confirmation of tax filings submitted to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN).

The submission process for the AR in Malaysia has been streamlined with the MyCoID 2016 portal, which allows companies to file documents digitally. Depending on regulatory requirements, companies may also need to submit financial statements in XBRL format.

For Exempt Private Companies (EPCs), there is no requirement to attach financial statements to the AR as long as the company remains solvent. However, if the company becomes insolvent, it must submit a financial report in compliance with statutory guidelines.
